CHS Grants Are Making A Difference

Yellowstone Academy

Houston CPA Society - CPAs Helping School’s Committee members (back row) Bradley Elgin (Harper Pearson & Company, P.C.) and Abdul Mobin presented a grant check issued to provide funds to help with uniforms for Middle School students at Yellowstone Academy.

Yellowstone Academy is a private, faith-based school founded in 2001 for the purpose of providing a high quality education for children living in poverty. The school opened its doors in 2002 to 64 three and four year old students, and has added one grade each year through eighth grade. The median annual income of Yellowstone families averages less than $10,000. Tuition provides less than 1% of expenses, so the school relies on the generosity of individuals, foundations, corporations, and congregations to meet its operating budget. Additionally, the school provides its students with transportation, breakfast, lunch, and uniforms. Last year, Yellowstone celebrated its 10th Anniversary and first eighth grade graduating class.

The contributions from the firm directly underwrote two scholarships. Harper & Pearson had over 20 employees that dedicated their time and effort volunteering and attending this successful event. There were over 240 Certified Public Accountants and their guests in attendance.

The scholarships funded by proceeds from the event are granted in $3,500 increments to students who intend to become CPAs in Texas, have demonstrated financial need, superior ethics, citizenship, and high scholastic achievement on campus based on the judgment of accounting faculty at each participating university. CPAs Helping Schools’ primary goal is to encourage all CPAs to be actively involved with the education of local youth. The funds raised support area education for grades PreK-12 through direct financial assistance made to teachers and administrators to underwrite special educational projects. In addition, CPAs Helping Schools’ members aid in improving the quality and scope of education to at-risk learners through mentoring, tutoring, collecting and distributing uniforms and other volunteer efforts.
